How do I add restrictions to a discussion forum?
With restrictions you can set conditions for the accessibility of the forum in two ways:
- Release conditions you use to determine when the forum is available (for example: students only see the forum if they have achieved a quiz score of 80% or higher. You can attach several release conditions to one forum).
- Group and section restrictions you use to determine for whom the forum is available (for example: only students from class 1 and 2 see the forum).
- Navigate to Course Tools in your course's navbar.
- Click Discussions. You land on the Discussies homepage.
- Click on the arrow behind the desired forum.
- Click Edit Forum.
- Click Restrictions (second tab).
- Check 'Hide from users' to make the forum invisible to students.
- Under Availability, you can choose between the following options under 'Has a start date':
- The forum is visible to students before the start date, but they can't access it yet.
- The forum is visible and accessible to students before the start date, but they cannot post threads or replies in it yet.
- The forum is not visible to students before the start date.
- Under Availability, you can choose between the options under 'Has an end date':
- The forum is visible to students after the due date, but they cannot access it.
- The forum is visible and accessible to students after the end date, but they cannot post threads or replies in it.
- The forum is not visible to students after the end date.
- Check Show in calendar if you want these dates to appear in the student's calendar.
- Under Release Conditions you can add terms when the forum is available:
- Click Attach Existing to add existing release terms:
- Select the desired conditions.
- Click Link.

- Click Create and Attach to add new release conditions:
- Select the desired conditions.
- Click Create.
- The release condition(s) is shown below
- Click Attach Existing to add existing release terms:
- Choose from the drop-down menu whether students must meet one condition or all conditions before they can access the forum.
- Under Add Groups and Section Restrictions you can add conditions to whom the forum is available:
- Check Restrict this forum to the following groups and sections to allow specific groups to access the forum.
- Click Add groups and sections and select the desired group or section. Then click Add.
- Click on Save and close to return to the Discussions homepage or on Save and add topic to create a topic (onderwerp aan te maken).
